When does your business need an interim IT director?
Many businesses outgrow their IT before they can justify a full-time IT director. Interim and fractional IT leadership fills that gap.
IT usually grows by accident. A supplier here, a new system there, someone in the office who "knows computers". Then one day the business is bigger, the risks are higher, and nobody is really in charge of technology.
Signs you need senior IT leadership
- IT decisions are made by whoever shouts loudest, or by suppliers
- You're not sure what you're paying for, or whether it's good value
- A cyber incident, outage or failed project has exposed gaps
- Your IT manager has left, or is overloaded
- You're planning growth, a merger, a new site or a major system change
- Customers, insurers or auditors are asking security questions you can't answer
What an interim IT director does
An interim IT director takes ownership of your technology for a defined period. Typically that means:
- Assessing the current state, systems, security, suppliers, costs and team
- Setting a strategy and roadmap aligned to the business plan
- Leading the IT team and suppliers, with clear priorities and accountability
- Owning the budget, renegotiating contracts and cutting waste
- Delivering key projects: ERP, cloud moves, security improvements
- Reporting to the board in plain English
- Handing over a stable, documented department, or helping recruit a permanent successor
Interim vs fractional
- Interim: full-time or near full-time for a set period, often three to twelve months, to cover a gap or drive change
- Fractional: part-time, ongoing senior leadership (for example a few days a month) for businesses that need direction but not a full-time director
Getting the most from interim IT leadership
- Be clear on the outcomes you need by the end of the engagement
- Give them authority to make decisions, not just recommendations
- Agree reporting, what the board needs to see and how often
- Plan the exit from day one: documentation, handover and successor
